New Delhi: Work on Noida international greenfield airport commonly known as Jewar airport in Jewar, Greater Noida can officially begin now as the Allahabad airport on Monday dismissed petitions filed by the farmers. It may be noted that eight farmers had filed a petition in Allahabad High court seeking to cancel the notification for land acquisition for the airport.

In their petition, the farmers wanted the notification to be quashed on the grounds of the administration violating norms. However, the petition was dismissed by the court. The work on the airport will start after the Lok Sabha elections. UP state government on October 30 last year notified acquisition off 1,239 hectares of land for the project under Section 11 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.

The Prime Minister was expected to lay the foundation stone for the project in March this year ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. However, the farmers moved court seeking four times the current circle rates which is why the foundation stone could not be laid down.

The cost of this airport project is estimated to be up to USD 3.1 billion. This will be the largest airport in India by surface area. The plan for the airport was approved by the Aviation Ministry on June 25, 2015, and was given in-principle government approval in June 2017. It will be implemented as a public-private partnership.

The airport is expected to take off some of the air passenger traffic burden away from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. India is expected to become the third largest aviation market in the world. It is estimated that this new airport will be built to handle 50 million passengers per year.

Worth mentioning here is that according to Centre for Aviation (CAPA), one of the world’s most trusted sources of market intelligence for aviation and travel industry, the airport is expected to be functional by 2022. The proposed international airport will not only bring places in Uttar Pradesh such as Kanpur and Allahabad closer to NCR under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, it will also benefit locations in neighbouring states.
