MUMBAI: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has filed a case against the office-bearers of a private firm who allegedly duped more than 310 investors of Rs 53 crore collectively.

One such investor from Ghatkopar had approached the Parksite police to register a complaint against Mira Door Construction Pvt Ltd on July 11, after which the case was transferred to the EOW.

The two accused, Vijay Pawar and Smita Rathor, had told investors that they were constructing residential plots on a 28-acre land off the Mumbai-Nashik highway, in Shahpur taluka, Thane. They said they required funds to complete the project, and promised 21% returns on their investments. They also told them that if they failed to return the money, they would give the investors land plots in Thane, said the police.

The company began collecting funds in 2015, but stopped paying interest after 2017. Investors asking for their money back was in vain, and a complaint was then filed.

EOW inspector Prakash Bagal said: “We are going through all the documents and our investigation is on.” Another source added that the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors’ Act, 1999, has also been invoked.
